Corporative Director of Eco Red Group

Eco Red Foundation for Sustainable Development in collaboration with Organizacion Nacional de Calidad Ambiental (ONCA) and The Travel Foundation, announces the commencement of the project "Best Environmental Practices in Golf Courses of the Mexican Caribbean."

The project began with an Environmental-Technical and functional diagnosis of the participating Golf Courses, and now has begun the second phase which consists of a series of professional training seminars that will be provided to the operation and maintenance personnel of the golf courses.

The seminar entitled: Bio-Rational Products in Golf Courses took place Friday November 14. This was the first in a series of professional training workshops which will be used to inform the maintenance staff about the new technologies, products and maintenance programs that will increase their efficiency and environmental quality.

"Best Enviromental Practices in Golf Courses of the Mexican Caribbean" is a project of regional scope whose objective is to increase the environmental quality of the golf courses in the area of Cancun/Riviera Maya, including the areas of Merida and Campeche, to establish the first certified "Ecological Golf Destination" worldwide.

The project consists on the creation, dissemination and application of "Best Environmental Practices" during the construction and operation of Golf Courses in the target area of the Yucatan Peninsula. These practices are expected to improve the regional ecosystem, promote the efficient use of natural resources, and create a new culture of environmentally-friendly Golf.

Participating courses will implement these practices to protect the regional ecosystems through the implementation of sustainable technologies for golf course maintenance that provides economic savings and the efficient use of the natural resources.

The project’s main objective is to place the region as a “Golf Ecological Destination”. The project will start in the Yucatan peninsula and will expand to the Baja California peninsula and other destinations worldwide.

The project will generate greater competitiveness in the global golf course market.

With this image, the destination will increase the number of golf tourists in the region; will attract golfers from North America, Europe, Asia and the rest of the world; and will draw the attention of the international media to promote the Mexican Caribbean as a “Golf Ecological Destination” and the environmental benefits created for the region.

The project will attract a large market with high purchasing power that seeks contact with nature and the regional culture during their visit. This will position the region as the ONLY golf destination identified for its environmental-protection initiative.

Golf courses that adopt best environmental practices can: ensure the efficient use of natural resources in their area; provide environmental conservation and biodiversity protection; create regional environmental benefits and services; and will incorporate golf with the regional culture and environment.

Participating golf courses will receive significant benefits including: the reduction of operation and maintenance costs (water, energy and environmental), will enhance their corporate image through the international recognition, and will give them a competitive advantage and greater international publicity.

It is important to point out that the "Best Environmental Practices in Golf Courses of the Mexican Caribbean" establishes actions that provide benefits that contribute to reducing global warming. This is accomplished through the environmental improvement of golf courses and their proper maintenance to reduce carbon emissions.

The Best Environmental Practices will promote the optimization of land conservation on golf courses to absorb larger amounts of CO2, in addition to generating favorable microclimates and allowing for the conservation of biodiversity and natural fauna movement.

The use of biodegradable products, water and energy savings and efficiency, and protection of water bodies are just some of the initiatives implemented that contribute to the conservation and survival of the natural ecosystems.

The project began with an analysis to evaluate the current conditions of the golf courses in the region. It is now in the second phase which consists of professional training seminars focused on informing about the latest technology, products and techniques available to achieve a more sustainable golf course maintenance program.

Subsequently, the golf courses will receive the necessary assessment and technical support to integrate the information presented in the seminars in their maintenance program. Regional monitoring and supervision will be performed in the participating courses to provide results that will be publicized to announce the results and regional environmental benefits that golf courses can provide.

The marketing campaign will consist of publicity in major national newspapers, industry specific media, tournaments and social events to achieve a wide promotion of the project. Business sponsorships from mayor global companies will further enhance the scope of the market that the project will reach.

The project proposes the integration and participation of tourism, private and public sectors which share the responsibility of environmental quality in the region, therefore, the project wishes to receive the support and approval from public agencies such as SEMARNAT, PROFEPA, SECTUR, FONATUR, state and municipal governments, and so on.

The "Best Practices in Golf Courses of the Mexican Caribbean" brings enormous environmental, social and economic benefits, by elevating and certifying the environmental quality of the golf courses in this region, and will achieve a worldwide attention (especially Europe, Asia, and South America) with the collaboration of The Travel Foundation and other organizations and companies interested in promoting the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in the area.
